Literacy Coalition of Onondaga County Celebrates Read Across America Day

Posted on February 20, 2011

LITERACY COALITION AND WHITE BRANCH LIBRARY CELEBRATE
READ ACROSS AMERICA DAY!

The Literacy Coalition of Onondaga County and the OCPL’s White Branch Library will host a press event celebrating the National Education Association’s Read Across America Day. The event will take place on Wednesday, March 2, 2011, at 3:30 pm at the White Branch Library, 763 Butternut Street, Syracuse, NY. The event will have a Dr. Seuss theme, as Read Across America Day is celebrated in conjunction with the birthday of the beloved children’s author.
A welcome is scheduled to be given by Branch Manager, Renate Dunsmore, followed by the reading of the Read Across America Poem. Bookmarks, stickers and hats will be given to the children that participate, and Dr. Seuss’s Cat-in-the-Hat is scheduled to make a guest appearance.

The Literacy Coalition’s focus is on the importance of regular reading to children as a means to develop skills needed to enter kindergarten ready to learn. The event hopes to encourage all members of the community to read every day and, ultimately, improve literacy levels across the lifespan in Onondaga County.
Why our focus on early childhood literacy? Research clearly shows that the early years involve the highest rates of learning, and the habits formed at a young age will stay with them for a lifetime. It’s therefore a perfect time to introduce children to books which educate and inform throughout life. Children of all ages can benefit from experiencing books on a day to day basis, and it’s always best to make time for children to read or be read to each and every day.

Join us in building a nation of readers! If you have any further questions, please let us know. Hope you will able to either attend our event or organize your own Read Across America event.
