LVGS student Kholida Bilalova was honored as a NYAACE Outstanding Student Award Recipient for 2011 at an award ceremony in Albany on March 8, 2011.
Ms. Bilalova was born in Uzbekistan. Her education was interrupted when the family fled to Azerbaijan in order to escape political persecution. Ms. Bilalova was a homemaker and primary caregiver for her two children when she first came to LVGS in 2008. She found it very hard to understand, read, and write English. Since then, she has progressed through four reading levels! She is highly motivated and takes every opportunity to learn.
As a result of the progress she has made, Ms. Bilalova is now employed as a cook’s assistant and home-aide. She translates for the couple whom she cares for. She is much more comfortable speaking English and has gained the confidence to interact more in the community. She has earned her driver’s license, opened a bank account, is seeking her GED, interning at the library, and working for ENABLE.
LVGS congratulates Ms. Bilalova and wishes her much success in all of her ventures!
