LVGS Welcomes VISTA Volunteer, Gretchen Jacobs!
Mannsville, New York native, Gretchen Jacobs recently joined the staff at Literacy Volunteers of Greater Syracuse as an AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer. AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) is a federally funded service program founded in 1965 with the goal of fighting poverty in American towns and cities.
Gretchen is joining Literacy Volunteers of Greater Syracuse (LVGS) for one year in the capacity of Community Outreach Volunteer, to assist LVGS in its efforts to make literacy accessible to all Onondaga County residents. Gretchen is one of many VISTA volunteers assigned to Literacy New York affiliates across New York State in the statewide Recruitment Campaign “New York Reads, New York Works” which links literacy, volunteers and the workplace. The rationale for New York Reads, New York Works is that in offering free courses and tutoring sessions in reading, writing and speaking English, opportunities for employment and education become achievable for community members who are struggling with literacy issues. Illiteracy and poverty are interconnected. In its mission to promote literacy, LVGS joins with hundreds of other agencies across the nation in the task of stopping cycles of poverty. Gretchen will promote literacy by aiding LVGS in its community outreach efforts and by establishing reciprocal referral agreements with local agencies. She looks forward to working with LVGS’ literacy partners in the year ahead on attaining the literacy and workplace goals of New York Reads, New York Works. Please join us in welcoming Gretchen Jacobs to LVGS!
