Be part of the solution. The possibilities are endless for an adult learning to read, write and speak English. Getting involved with Literacy Volunteers of Greater Syracuse promises to be one of the most fulfilling experiences you will ever have.

Basic Reading & Literacy and ESOL Tutors

Literacy Volunteers of Greater Syracuse (LVGS) is recruiting volunteers to be trained as Basic Reading & Literacy and ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) tutors. If you can read and are committed to helping an individual learn to read, write and speak English, you can become a Literacy Volunteer Tutor. Participants do NOT need to have any teaching experience or speak another language in order to tutor in the program. LVSG provides a 15-hour Tutor Training Workshop that will prepare volunteers to teach individuals to speak, read and/or write English.

Annual commitment: 60 - 75 hours per year
Upon completion of the tutor workshop, participants are asked to meet with their student for at least 2 hours per week.

Office Support

Provide assistance with preparing bulk mailings, data entry, answering the telephone, compiling workshop manuals, copying, and updating mailing lists.

Short-term Commitment: Flexible to your availability. Typically 4 hours.

IT Support

Provide IT assistance and /or recommendations with equipment purchasing, LAN maintenance, software upgrades, and general computer maintenance.

Short-term Commitment: Flexible to your availability. Task specific.
